Onlays is a conservative method to protect your tooth instead of having a crown that involves a more aggresive tooth reduction
When there is a big amalgam (silver) filling we can replace it with a conservative method of an onlay.
Inlays and onlays are great alternatives or replacements for silver fillings. These restorations are also another form of esthetic restorations. They are fabricated (indirectly) by the dental technician in the lab so that the fit and esthetics are of the highetst quality.
A common and particular use for these restorations are the replacement of very old, large silver fillings. In the past when a large filling that covered most of the chewing surface of the tooth failed the solution was to prepare the tooth for a cap or crown. This procedure requires the dentist to remove a substantial amount of tooth structure to replace the filling. Onlays/overlays are also useful for teeth that have been worn down due to teeth grinding.
